Umbrella Labs nootropics: racetams, peptides and more
Umbrella Labs nootropics make up the biggest part of our shop, with more than 250 products. That much choice can be hard to sort through, so this guide groups the main compounds by type, explains what each group has been studied for, and helps you pick a format.
What counts as a nootropic?
The word was coined in 1972 by Corneliu Giurgea, the Romanian chemist who worked on piracetam. He used it for compounds studied for effects on memory and learning. Today it’s used much more loosely, for almost anything researched for effects on the brain.
A few nootropics are approved medicines in some countries. Most are research compounds. Umbrella Labs sells all of them for laboratory research use only.
Racetams
Racetams share a pyrrolidone ring and were the first compounds called nootropics. Piracetam was first made by UCB in the 1960s. Aniracetam, oxiracetam and pramiracetam came later and differ in strength and how they dissolve. Aniracetam is fat-soluble, while piracetam and oxiracetam dissolve in water.
Noopept
Noopept was developed in Russia in the 1990s. It’s a dipeptide-derived compound that the body converts to cycloprolylglycine, and it’s active in much smaller amounts than piracetam. Umbrella Labs sells Noopept powder in 10 gram packs and Noopept capsules at 20mg each.
Peptide nootropics: Semax and Selank
Semax and Selank are short peptides, also developed in Russia, where both are registered medicines. Semax is based on a fragment of ACTH, and Selank is based on tuftsin, an immune peptide. They’re mostly studied as nasal sprays. Umbrella Labs stocks the Semax peptide vial and Selank peptide vial, and both come as nasal sprays too.
Wakefulness compounds
Adrafinil is converted to modafinil in the liver. Flmodafinil is a fluorinated relative of modafinil. Both are used in research on wakefulness and attention.
Choline sources
Alpha-GPC and citicoline supply choline, which the brain uses to make acetylcholine. They’re often included in racetam research, since several racetams are thought to act on acetylcholine signaling.
Newer research compounds
The range also covers compounds with less published data. J147 is a curcumin derivative from the Salk Institute studied in Alzheimer’s models. Bromantane is an adamantane compound registered in Russia. Product pages say clearly where research is limited.
Choosing a format for Umbrella Labs nootropics
Most compounds come as powder, capsules or a liquid, and the compound and purity are the same across all three.
- Nootropic powders are the cheapest per milligram and the most flexible. You’ll need a scale that reads to 0.01g or better.
- Nootropic capsules hold a fixed amount each, so there’s no weighing.
- Nootropic liquids are pre-dissolved at a set concentration, so you measure by volume.
How Umbrella Labs tests its nootropics
Every batch is tested by LC-MS, and each product page lists the purity and CAS number. Our lab testing page explains the process.
