What is PRL-8-53?
PRL-8-53 (CAS 51352-88-6) is a methyl benzoate derivative synthesised by Nikolaus Hansl at Creighton University in the 1970s.
Its mechanism isn’t well understood.

PRL-8-53 in published research
Hansl and Mead reported one small human trial in 1978 that found better recall of word lists.
There haven’t been follow-up studies.

Working with loose PRL-8-53 powder
Loose powder is the most flexible way to buy PRL-8-53. You can weigh any amount you need, dissolve it in your own solvent, or fill your own capsules. It’s also the cheapest format per milligram.
For small amounts you’ll want a scale that reads to at least 0.01g, and ideally 0.001g. Our digital scale and micro scoops make it easier to get consistent measurements. Weigh onto clean weighing paper, and close the bag or jar straight after so the powder doesn’t pick up moisture.
Making a solution from PRL-8-53 powder
To make a stock solution, decide on the final volume and concentration first. For 30mL at 10mg/mL you’d weigh 300mg of PRL-8-53, dissolve it in about 25mL of solvent, then top up to exactly 30mL.
Check the compound’s solubility in your chosen solvent before you start, and try a small test amount first. Store the finished solution in a labelled glass bottle.
PRL-8-53 quality and testing
We test each batch of PRL-8-53 by LC-MS, which pairs liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The chromatography splits the sample into its components and the mass spectrometer identifies them, which tells you both identity and purity. This batch came in at 99% or higher.
Small differences between batches are normal, so write the batch number from the label into your records. If something looks wrong when your order arrives, like discoloured powder or a cloudy solution, set it aside and don’t use it.
Storage and handling
Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a clean, dry scoop each time, and reseal the container straight away. Label anything you decant with the compound, amount and date, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Common questions about the PRL-8-53 powder
What can I dissolve PRL-8-53 powder in?
That depends on the compound’s solubility and your protocol. Check the solubility data for your solvent first, and test a small amount before making up a full batch.
What scale do I need?
One that reads to 0.01g at minimum, and 0.001g for very small amounts. Our pocket scale reads to 0.01g.
