What is 5-HTP?
5-Hydroxytryptophan is the direct precursor of serotonin. The body makes it from tryptophan, and it’s also extracted from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds.
It crosses the blood-brain barrier, unlike serotonin.

Working with 5-HTP in solution
5-HTP liquid is pre-dissolved at 150mg/mL, which makes measuring simple: you work in volumes instead of weighing tiny amounts of powder.
Use a clean graduated pipette or dropper for each draw so nothing goes back into the bottle. Shake gently first, because some solutions settle over time. We stock transfer pipettes and dropper bottles if you need them.
Making working dilutions of 5-HTP
If your protocol calls for a lower concentration, dilute a measured volume into a clean glass bottle. For example, 1mL of the 150mg/mL solution plus 1mL of carrier gives 2mL at 75mg/mL. Use the same carrier where possible, or a solvent your protocol allows, and mix gently.
Make up only what you’ll use in the short term, and label the new bottle with the concentration and date.
Purity testing for 5-HTP
We test each batch of 5-HTP by LC-MS, which pairs liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The chromatography splits the sample into its components and the mass spectrometer identifies them, which tells you both identity and purity. This batch came in at 99% or higher.
Small differences between batches are normal, so write the batch number from the label into your records. If something looks wrong when your order arrives, like discoloured powder or a cloudy solution, set it aside and don’t use it.
