What is IDRA-21?

IDRA-21 is a benzothiadiazine that reduces AMPA receptor desensitization. It’s related to the diuretic cyclothiazide.

It’s much longer-lasting than aniracetam in animal studies.

Research on IDRA-21

Thompson and colleagues reported in PNAS (1995) that IDRA-21 improved delayed matching tasks in rhesus monkeys.

Later work raised concerns about excitotoxicity at high concentrations.

Working with IDRA-21 in solution

The liquid form saves you the work of dissolving powder. IDRA-21 is already in solution at 10mg/mL, so every millilitre holds the same amount. A 1mL draw gives you 10mg.

Use a clean graduated pipette or dropper for each draw so nothing goes back into the bottle. Shake gently first, because some solutions settle over time. We stock transfer pipettes and dropper bottles if you need them.

Making working dilutions of IDRA-21

If your protocol calls for a lower concentration, dilute a measured volume into a clean glass bottle. For example, 1mL of the 10mg/mL solution plus 1mL of carrier gives 2mL at 5mg/mL. Use the same carrier where possible, or a solvent your protocol allows, and mix gently.

Make up only what you’ll use in the short term, and label the new bottle with the concentration and date.

IDRA-21 quality and testing

Every batch of IDRA-21 is checked with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) before it goes on sale. LC-MS separates a sample into its parts and identifies each one by mass, so it confirms what the compound is and how much of the sample it makes up. The current batch tested at 99% or higher.

Small differences between batches are normal, so write the batch number from the label into your records. If something looks wrong when your order arrives, like discoloured powder or a cloudy solution, set it aside and don’t use it.

Storage and handling

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap tight so the solution doesn’t evaporate or pick up contaminants. Label anything you decant with the compound, amount and date, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
