What is Methylene blue?
Methylene blue is a phenothiazine dye first made in 1876. It accepts and donates electrons, and at low concentrations it can feed electrons into the mitochondrial chain.
It’s an approved drug for methemoglobinemia.

Measuring Methylene blue liquid
The liquid form saves you the work of dissolving powder. Methylene blue is already in solution at 0.25mg/mL, so every millilitre holds the same amount. A 1mL draw gives you 0.25mg.
Use a clean graduated pipette or dropper for each draw so nothing goes back into the bottle. Shake gently first, because some solutions settle over time. We stock transfer pipettes and dropper bottles if you need them.
Making working dilutions of Methylene blue
If your protocol calls for a lower concentration, dilute a measured volume into a clean glass bottle. For example, 1mL of the 0.25mg/mL solution plus 1mL of carrier gives 2mL at 0.125mg/mL. Use the same carrier where possible, or a solvent your protocol allows, and mix gently.
Make up only what you’ll use in the short term, and label the new bottle with the concentration and date.
Methylene blue quality and testing
Every batch of Methylene blue is checked with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) before it goes on sale. LC-MS separates a sample into its parts and identifies each one by mass, so it confirms what the compound is and how much of the sample it makes up. The current batch tested at 99% or higher.
