What is Alagebrium?

Alagebrium (ALT-711) is a thiazolium compound designed to break advanced glycation end-product (AGE) crosslinks in proteins like collagen.

It was developed by Alteon.

Alagebrium in published research

Kass and colleagues reported improved arterial compliance in older adults in 2001.

Later trials were stopped for business reasons.

AGE crosslinks build up in collagen with age and in diabetes, stiffening arteries and heart muscle, which is the process alagebrium was designed to reverse.

You can find the papers on PubMed. We don’t make claims beyond what that literature reports.

Measuring Alagebrium liquid

Alagebrium liquid is pre-dissolved at 15mg/mL, which makes measuring simple: you work in volumes instead of weighing tiny amounts of powder.

Use a clean graduated pipette or dropper for each draw so nothing goes back into the bottle. Shake gently first, because some solutions settle over time. We stock transfer pipettes and dropper bottles if you need them.

Making working dilutions of Alagebrium

If your protocol calls for a lower concentration, dilute a measured volume into a clean glass bottle. For example, 1mL of the 15mg/mL solution plus 1mL of carrier gives 2mL at 7.5mg/mL. Use the same carrier where possible, or a solvent your protocol allows, and mix gently.

Make up only what you’ll use in the short term, and label the new bottle with the concentration and date.

How we test Alagebrium

We test each batch of Alagebrium by LC-MS, which pairs liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. The chromatography splits the sample into its components and the mass spectrometer identifies them, which tells you both identity and purity. This batch came in at 99% or higher.

Small differences between batches are normal, so write the batch number from the label into your records. If something looks wrong when your order arrives, like discoloured powder or a cloudy solution, set it aside and don’t use it.

Storage and handling

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap tight so the solution doesn’t evaporate or pick up contaminants. Label anything you decant with the compound, amount and date, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
